A credit bearing merSETA registered skills programme offered on a full-time basis over 4 weeks.

Purpose of the course:

The course is intended for people in the field of engineering and learners within the fabrication and welding field.

Course outline:

The structure of the course focuses on the skills and knowledge required within the fabrication and welding field.

Entry requirements:

Communication and Mathematical Literacy NQF Level 1.

Upon successful completion of the course, the learner will be proficient in the following areas:

Can identify the types, properties and common applications of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and demonstrate an understanding of common testing and treatment procedures.
Describing and explaining the oxy-acetylene gas welding process.
Describing the shielded metal arc welding process
Selecting, assembling and conducting pre-operational checks of oxy-acetylene gas welding equipment.
Preparing for the oxy-fuel cutting operation.
Cutting the material.
Preparing work pieces prior to welding.
Welding metals with oxy-acetylene gas welding process in the down-hand position.

Assessment method:

To monitor the progress and effectiveness of the learning throughout the training, continuous assessments (formative) are carried out by way of written tests and practical assignments.
