Type of course:

A credit bearing merSETA registered skills programme offered on a full-time  basis over 15 days. 

Purpose of the course:

The course is suitable for people or learners within the fabrication and welding fields wanting to achieve relevant Gas Tungsten and Metal Arc Welding skills. Learners will be taught how to select and set up gas tungsten arc welding equipment, weld workpieces and inspect the welded pipes for defects. 

Course outline:

The structure of the course focuses on the skills and knowledge required to service, maintain, repair or manufacture a product by using relevant basic welding techniques as well as hand skills for Gas Tungsten and Metal Arc Welding Skills (TIG). 

Entry requirements:

A general Education and Training Certificate at NQF Level 1 or ABET Level 4.  

Upon successful completion of the course, the learner will be proficient in the following areas:
  • Describing the gas tungsten arc welding process
  • Describing the shielded metal arc and gas tungsten arc welding process
  • Selecting and setting up the gas tungsten arc welding equipment
  • Welding workpieces
  • Inspecting welded pipes for defects

Assessment method:
To monitor the progress and effectiveness of the learning throughout the training, continuous assessments (formative) are carried out by way of written tests and practical assignments.

US243054 - Weld carbon steel pipes, using the gas tungsten arc welding process in all positions - NQF Level 4 - 20 Credits

US243085 - Weld carbon steel workpieces, using the shielded metal arc and gas tungsten arc combination welding processes in all positions - NQF Level 4 - 8 Credits

US243088 - Weld carbon steel pipe, with a combination of welding processes using the gas tungsten arc welding and gas metal arc welding, in all positions - NQF Level 4 - 8 Credits
